The Botanical Society of Nigeria (BOSON) publishes the Nigerian Journal of Botany (NJB). The society was established in 1984 and incorporated in 2005 as a collection of botanists from around Nigeria. The purpose of their coming together was to further enhance the status of study and application of botany as a field of scientific enquiry in the country.

The society does this through hosting annual conferences held at locations that have botanical affiliations within Nigerian universities and research institutes. The first conference was held at University of Benin, April, 1987 while the most recent one was held at Nigerian Defense Academy, University Kaduna in March 2005.

Another way through which  the society aims to achieve its goal is by maintaining regular publication of NJB. First published in 1988, this journal is now in its 17th edition, with a volume being published each year. This journal presents important findings by Nigerian and Non-Nigerian Botanists, involved in research into all aspects of basic and applied botany and study of plants generally. Membership is by application and  is open to all botanists working on relevant aspects of botany, within and outside the country. Four categories of membership are recognized:

Category                            Dues

Student Member                  N500

Ordinary Member                N2,000

Life Member                        N10,000

Corporate Member               N20,000

Membership dues are paid annually and subject to review without notice.

Membership application forms and other information can be obtained from the Honorary Secretary, BOSON and also downloaded from the website.

Affairs of the society are managed by a National council made up of elected members of BOSON and chaired by the President. Other members of council include a Vice-President, Honorary Secretary, assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Editor of NJB and his two deputy editors, as well as the immediate past president and other elected ordinary council members.

Tenure on council is generally for a term of two years, renewable for another two years, except in the last case of president, whose first term in office for a period of three years. Council meets at least twice a year at locations usually determined from time to time, and has the mandate of managing the affairs of BOSON according to the guidelines stipulated in the constitution.

The society also confers fellowship status to deserving past and present members as well as friends/supporters of BOSON. These awards are determined through nomination to the fellowship/awards committee which after due screening/evaluation, recommends deserving recipients to council. The limits, and frequency of awards are as determined by council. Fellowships are for life commencing on the date of award.
